You will need lots of coffee/tea with this one - wondering why? Because you just can't put this one down...you'll fight sleep...postpone tasks at hand...revise your priority list as this book will take over everything! Trust me...I had to keep my 7 month old baby as priority #2 while I was reading this...I guess that explains how gripping the suspense is.
Coming to the book - there are three main characters who drive the story
Rachel - A weird, creepy, alcoholic, depressed and jobless ex wife who is trying to run away from her past life. She comes across as someone who just can't let go off her memories...tied up badly..weak! Somebody who has given up on life and is on a verge of a mental breakdown - she seems to struggle with realizing what is happening for real and how much of that is her imagination? But inspite of her lost self -she is the one who keeps us on the edge all the time.Kudos to Hawkins for bringing her out so well...you can almost picture her drunk self doing all the crazy stuff and a special mention to the awkwardness she feels - it is one of the best descriptions - you can totally feel it...like you've been there in her shoes. You feel bad for her....you want to stop her...you want some miracle to happen to help her...that is how she creates a place for herself in your mind and your heart.
"When did you become so weak?” I don’t know. I don’t know where that strength went, I
don’t remember losing it. I think that over time it got chipped away, bit by bit, by life, by the living of it.” - Rachel
Magen - The mystery women...the seductress.I could almost picture Jennifer Lawrence as her (I think she would have depicted the character perfectly - the craziness...the lost but lonely soul). She's a perfect depiction of a rebellious but clueless personality - she does not want to go by rules - she wants excitement in her life and she is ready to pay the price - but behind this rebellious and bold character you have a heartbroken, lonely person who craves to be held warmly.
"Being the other woman is a huge turn-on, there's no point denying it. You're the one he can't help but betray his wife for , even though he loves her. That's just how irresistible you are"- Megan
Anna - The perfect blond - knows what she wants and how to get it - possessive - selfish - insecure housewife - initially she seems to be a typical everyday housewife - but as you read on...her character gets stronger not in a good way though...its like the layers come out one at a time...you might feel what a terrible person she is...but that's the beauty of Hawkins writing!
"I miss being a mistress.I enjoyed it.I loved it, in fact.I never felt guilty. I pretended I did." - Anna
Off course it's not just about women but they happen to be the strongest characters.
We also have the husbands - Tom and Scott, who add to the drama but lets save it for you to discover ..we do not want to let out the suspense. Do we?? :)
What I really liked about this book was the shades of grey of each of these characters were captured so beautifully...you hate them but at the same time you are in awe of them...they grip you hard.
Through this book, Hawkins also brings out a superbly relevant topic - emotional abuse - and how and to what extent it impacts a person...the psyche behind it.People still do not recognize or acknowledge it yet...but its high time we take notice and Stop the damage it does.
The complexities of marriage, moving on from your past, trying to find some peace and sleep...the characters take you through all of these emotions through this incredible journey and if you like drama, thrill and killer suspense - this book is for you!!
P.S: Do not miss out on the dates - every date mentioned is important for you to correlate the story the 3 main characters are telling.
